Kentucky Elk Research

I was lucky this year to be able to hunt during a time when most are wishing for spring fishing season.  As part of a UK and KY Fish and Wildlife research project, I spent most of the winter months placing tracking collars around the necks of bull elk in eastern Kentucky.  This research will allow elk managers a look into the year-round lives of the sometimes reclusive mature bull elk.

This bull was caught as a calf in 2005 and thus has the original blue ear tags.

He is only a 5x5 but has great tine length.  The blindfold is placed on the animal during immobilization to reduce stress.

Beautiful tall-racked bull elk wearing its new GPS tracking collar.

The sun sets on the elk research crew.
