My grandfather taught me to hunt, fish, and generally be prepared for everything that life has to throw my way. His truck was stocked with a few fishing poles, an old Browning 20ga, and enough tools to push, pull, fix, or lift us back to the house. I learned that the extraction of a heavy Ford pickup can only be accomplished with the proper harmony of cable tension on the winch and the smooth application of horsepower. I try daily to adopt his mind set of never getting excited when the shit hits the fan. Just as flooring a buried truck only puts it in deeper, getting excited about a problem only makes it worse - a lesson that I was lucky enough to learn once when swamp land and farm equipment became intertwined.
One could only hope that at age 90 we are still walking, let alone successfully hunting turkeys
A beautiful tribute to your grandfather.
