Kentucky's Spring White Bass Run

The annual white bass run marks a critical point in my year - winter is behind us.  The days are warming up, yet the cool evening air still warrants a jacket.  Wood ducks are in full plumage and flying around in their mating pairs.  Turkeys are gobbling, yet we still have another week before they consume that majority of our time.  The white bass run fills a niche in my schedule and the cooler.

There are many places in this state where white bass run up creeks in the thousands.  Leave the fancy gear and techniques at the house and get back to the basics.  Even the overly technical art of casting a fly rod is simplified.  Mending the line, making the perfect drift, or matching the hatch all get thrown out the window.  Tie on a good old popeye or a small streamer and get ready to watch the rod double over.

You also never know when a hybrid will strike!
