On a recent trip to UTAH I was able to make my D90 take a few good photos. I also have used a few of these photos as guinea pigs in a test of some new HDR (high dynamic range) programs that link up with photoshop. I am currently not sure about my stance on HDR photos, but a few of the programs yielded great results - conjure up your inner artist when you look at these.
I tended to appreciate the smoothing options much more than the HDR options. Although these programs cannot make a poor photo great, they can make a great photo more interesting.
